A bit about Milly

Milly was born in March 2013, at 37 weeks gestation weighing 4lb 13oz. Prior to her birth complications were detected, but she did not receive a diagnosis until she was twelve weeks old. Milly had a very rare congenital condition.

Initially it was vital that Milly grew as much as possible, as her Doctors wanted her to be strong for theatre to give her the best chance of recovering from what was always going to be a big operation. The prognosis was good at this time – she was growing well and appeared to be thriving despite her difficulties.

“Her smile was infectious and her heart was warming”

Milly spent the early part of her life in hospital, but was able to come home at fifteen months, supported by her mum and dad and a team of overnight carers. She remained at home for approximately eight months, during which time she went on holiday, enjoyed a donkey ride each week and lived the life of a normal, happy eighteen month old.

Unfortunately, the joy we felt as Milly began to crawl, walk and progress as we hoped was short lived. The extra exertion put strain on Milly’s heart, which meant that in January 2015 she was admitted to hospital and the decision was made to operate.

Sadly following heart surgery Milly suffered numerous post-operative complications and died the night before her second birthday. This was a very sad occasion as Milly was a vivacious, happy little girl, but this mountain was just too high for her to climb.

“Milly, you have changed the way I practise as a doctor forever”
