Milly was born at the Women’s Hospital in Birmingham but was transferred to Birmingham Children’s when she was five weeks old. The experience can be overwhelming, as the wards are vast and thronging with hundreds of staff who work day and night constantly trying to make these children better. They provide exceptional care to every child they meet and this can be extremely noisy at times. All of this became our normal day to day life, and Milly’s team soon became our hospital friends and family, supporting us through this very challenging time.
We spent a large proportion of our time on the paediatric intensive care unit, a 31 bed unit which is world renowned for providing exceptional care to the children it looks after.
Things didn’t work out how we would have liked for Milly, but I can honestly say that every member of staff I ever met at BCH did everything they could for Milly during her journey. The medical care Milly received was outstanding, but the unit also provided fantastic social care as well.
Although Milly was in hospital for Christmas 2013, the hospital managed to get her home for a few precious hours. It is things like this that made a real difference to Milly and everyone who loved her, and we are grateful for the constant efforts of BCH to help Milly recover and spend her precious time with her family.
